Arkansas Lawmakers Secure Federal Housing Grants

Washington, – February 20, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, along with U.S. Representative John Boozman (AR-03) today announced that the Universal Housing Development Corporation is the recipient of a $300,000 grant and the Northwest Regional Housing Authority is the recipient of a $90,000 grant. The funding is awarded by the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP).

HAC allows lower income families the opportunity to become homeowners and requires them to contribute at least 100 hours to help build their home.

“Every family deserves to live in a safe, secure home,” said Lincoln. “Not only will this grant help Arkansans find affordable housing, it will also help strengthen the state’s economy. I’m pleased to see this funding awarded to our state.

“This opportunity will not only provide lower-income families with affordable housing, but it will also provide them a chance to achieve their dreams of homeownership,” said Pryor. “The lives of Northwest Arkansas residents will be profoundly transformed through these funds.”

“These funds are a blessing for Arkansans who aren’t able to find affordable housing,” Boozman said. “Owning our own home is part of the American Dream and this is an opportunity to help Arkansas families make that a reality.”

The Universal Housing Development Corporation will use the funds to build 20 houses and the Northwest Regional Housing Authority will use the funds to build seven houses.
