Debris Removal Begins With Property Owner

-

LITTLE ROCK, AR – May 12, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — State and federal officials remind residents who were affected by the severe storms and tornadoes of April 9 that removing traffic-blocking and potentially harmful debris is a total community effort that begins with the property owner.

“Debris removal and disaster recovery go hand in hand,” Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Moore of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said. “We are assisting state and local governments in removing debris within the limits of our programs.”

Property owners should make sure that the debris they remove does not block storm drains, fireplugs, alleyways or pedestrian traffic. Check with your local government for the curb debris pickup schedule. Those who are physically unable to help move debris should also check with their local officials to see if there are voluntary agencies who may be able to assist them.

Contractors working on homes are responsible for removing and disposing of any debris (inside and out) that is involved in the re-construction or repairing process such as roof shingles, siding, insulation, and wallboard.

FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terrorism.
