Huntsville Awarded Federal Housing Grant

Washington, D.C. – January 16, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, along with U.S. Representative John Boozman (AR-03) today announced that the Northwest Arkansas Regional Housing Development Corporation is the recipient of a $2,121,700 grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 202 program.

The Section 202 program allows elderly persons to live as independently as possible in the community by increasing the supply of rental housing with the availability of supportive services.

“Finding secure, affordable housing in today’s economic climate can be a challenge for many Arkansans,” said Lincoln. “These funds will help elderly residents of Northwest Arkansas find a home that suits their physical and social needs. I’m pleased to see Huntsville receive this grant and I remain committed to ensuring that Arkansans have access to essential resources and support.”

“This housing opportunity will provide a lifeline to Northwest Arkansas seniors who are struggling in today’s economic downturn and have nowhere else to go,” said Pryor.

“In the current economic environment we must use our existing resources to assist some of our communities’ most vulnerable citizens, the elderly.” Boozman said “In this time of economic uncertainty, affordable housing is a blessing for all Arkansans.”

The Northwest Arkansas Regional Housing Development Corporation will use the funds to build 20 one-bedroom units of semi-detached row houses for very low income elderly persons in Huntsville. This complex will give residents access to safe affordable housing.
